Synthetic fabrics used in tents and backpacks are coated with a water repellent treatment, but exposure to ultraviolet (UV) light can destroy this water repellency and weaken the fabric, significantly reducing the lifespan of your equipment. Applying Nikwax Tent & Gear SolarProof can double the effective life of your gear by protecting it from UV damage, while also providing Durable Water Repellency (DWR) to keep you dry in the rain.

Tents and backpacks are made from synthetic fabrics like nylon or polyester, which are treated with a thin watertight polyurethane (PU) or elastomeric coating on the inside, and a DWR coating on the outside. These features provide excellent strength, water resistance, and lightweight qualities, making them perfect for outdoor gear. However, these fabrics are vulnerable to UV damage. Continuous exposure to sunlight for just two weeks can cause them to lose up to 50% of their strength. Additionally, if left damp for extended periods, the inner coating can degrade.
