Your down gear may start soaking up water if it’s dirty. Start by cleaning it with Nikwax Down Wash Direct. If the item is relatively new or recently re-waterproofed, the cleaning process will also help revitalise the Durable Water Repellency (DWR). However, after heavy use, you’ll need to add DWR using Nikwax Down Proof after cleaning with Nikwax Down Wash Direct. This treatment will restore DWR to both the outer fabric and the down fill, ensuring your gear remains water-resistant.

Down items require Nikwax Down Proof to maintain their insulation. Many alternative waterproofing products are solvent-based aerosols or water-based treatments that contain PFCs, which can be harmful to the environment and consumer health. Aerosols are also flammable, and non-down-specific products can compromise the loft of your down, often treating only the fabric surface rather than the down fill itself.
